When climate adaptation becomes design

New ‘Sponge City’ CASCADE collection

With GDM.CASCADE stone, the tried-and-tested Klimastein technology takes on a completely new design dimension for the first time. Together with the internationally renowned designer Bodo Sperlein, we have developed a collection that seamlessly combines climate-active functionality with exceptional design.

CASCADE stone creates spaces that are more than just infrastructure. They become a design element in their own right, enhancing the quality of the environment and combining ecological responsibility with architectural excellence.

Climate-active surface. Design in motion.

GDM.CASCADE stone is based on two interlocking elements with gently curved geometry. Instead of a traditional grid, a precisely controlled, flowing joint pattern emerges, forming different patterns depending on how it is laid.

As a result, paths, squares and promenades appear less austere and, at the same time, more tranquil. The modular geometry lends rhythm and depth to large areas and deliberately sets itself apart from conventional paving systems.

Where climate control takes on fluid forms

3 functions | 1 system

Manufactured using 3-layer climate stone technology, GDM.CASCADE stone has been specifically developed for ‘sponge city’ applications. The paving allows rainwater to infiltrate directly at the point of fall, remains permanently water-permeable and breathable, and, thanks to its capillary-active structure, supports natural evaporation.

1. Rainwater infiltrates on site

2. Water remains within the urban environment

3. Evaporation cools the area just like a green space

ADVANTAGES

  • Provides permanent, decentralised drainage
  • reduces the burden on the sewerage system
  • supports the natural water cycle
  • stores water via capillary action
  • provides evaporative cooling

Thanks to the three-layer Klimastein technology, the surface system is able to absorb and store more water. For greater evaporative cooling.

Natural colour harmony

The warm beige tone of GDM.CASCADE stone combines high design quality with an optimised SRI value, which reduces the surface’s absorption of heat.

Its unique effect is created by the interplay of three surface finishes. Velvety-matt, gently textured and polished surfaces reflect light in different ways, creating a vibrant interplay of texture, depth and movement. This brings the flowing design language of GDM.CASCADE to life in a unique way.

Nuances that bring spaces to life

Whether urban squares, promenades, parks, corporate campuses or modern residential neighbourhoods: the CASCADE collection combines creative freedom with climate-active functionality and opens up new possibilities for designing sustainable urban spaces.

CASCADE planters – planters that seem to grow out of the ground

With the CASCADE planters, Bodo Sperlein translates the design language of the paving stone into sculptural forms. Stone and planter follow the same geometric logic – a design continuity that links the ground surface with the structure above. The planters do not appear as objects superimposed on the surface, but as a spatial densification of the paving: they ‘grow’ out of the surface and allow its structure to be experienced in three dimensions.

With their stepped contours, the CASCADE planters have a sculptural and striking presence without being overpowering. They structure large squares, guide the flow of movement and create clearly defined recreational areas. At the same time, they integrate vegetation precisely where it is most effective in an urban context. Greening, shading and evaporative cooling thus become a deliberate part of the spatial concept – a key contribution to the blue-green infrastructure of modern cities.

All planters are manufactured in the Gravelli studio.

Design that goes beyond the ground: with GRAVELLI, we take design beyond the ground. High-quality planters create structure, integrate greenery and shape squares, promenades and communal spaces as cohesive living environments.

“The distinctive geometry creates fluid transitions, rhythmic structures and a new form of urban landscape design. This makes climate adaptation visible and tangible.”
