New community centre, Niederwerrn

In the Lower Franconian municipality of Niederwerrn, a new town centre has been created at the transition from the old town to the established residential area. In keeping with the project's high sustainability standards, the planners decided to design all open spaces with GDM.KLIMASTEIN proActive.

With the vision of a changing place, a new social centre and sustainable inner development of Niederwerrn with a community hall, club room and café as well as a museum and an "energy barn" were created in intensive dialogue with the local population. Green spaces for markets and festivals, a farmer's garden and seating steps for events organised by the neighbouring library connect the new "MittenIm" ensemble with the surrounding buildings. The new utilisation concept was developed to counteract the extinction of the old town. However, the municipality is also setting an example for sustainable building and upcycling: a circular new building complements two refurbished existing buildings. Schlicht Lamprecht Architekten saw the new community centre as "a house made of wood and one made of stone". From the foundations to the façade, all concrete components are made of R-concrete. A viaduct built in the 1960s and dismantled in 2019 was used for this purpose. A converted historic half-timbered house houses the collection of a long-established local grocer as a museum and was also sustainably renovated in terms of energy efficiency: Soft wood fibre insulation with clay plaster surfaces characterise the interior.
